Institute of Information Optoelectronic Technology

IOTRI(Information Optoelectronic Technology Research Institute) is established in November 1999 by merging former Electronic Physics Division and Optoelectronics Division together in the Dept. of Electronic Engineering. At present the Institute has 30 faculty members including one member of Chinese Science Academy, 16 Professors and 7 Associate Professors. The research activities of IOTRI have been enhanced by the mergence of the two former divisions and have been providing a focus in the field of information optoelectronics and optoelectronic technologies. 
Based on the fact that optoelectronics will play an important role in the 21 century, IOTRI devote to train the students for professional leadership in optoelectronics, who have solid theoretic foundation, wide and extensive knowledge, high creative ability and be good at applying high-technology into the practices to fulfill the national four modernizations. At present the faculty members of IOTRI are offering 23 courses for undergraduate students and 14 postgraduate courses for students studying towards D.Eng. and M.Eng. degrees. It is expected that about 3-4 post doctoral researchers, above 20 doctoral candidates and more than 20 postgraduate students are enrolled every year. 
Information Optoelectronics is a high technology incorporates both photonics and electronics. It is one of the key technologies supporting future industries in information, telecommunication, environment protection and many other areas. IOTRI brings together research activities formerly covered by Electronic Physics Division and Optoelectronics Division including research projects in various optoelectronic devices, integrated photonic devices, optical fiber telecommunication and networks, optical display, optical storage and optical fiber sensing systems. There are currently six research directions in IOTRI. They are: 
1. High-speed, high-capacity optical fiber communications and broadband optical networks
Including study on key technologies of DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing), ultrahigh speed OTDM (optical time division multiplexing), photonic switching, all optical network, IP over WDM, ASON, OCDMA, FTTH, ROF and R&D on Er-doped fiber amplifiers, Fiber Raman amplifiers and UV-induced fiber Bragg gratings, etc.

2. Integrated Optoelectronic and Photonic Devices
Including R&D on novel semiconductor lasers, high-speed modulators, optical switchers, MOEMS (Micro Optical Electro-Mechanical System), acousto-optical devices, photonic crystal materials and devices, surface plasmon-polaritons, and other active and passive components, etc
3. Novel Display and Electroluminescence Materials and Devices
Including novel field-induced electron emission display devices, wide band-gap light emitting devices, electric-induced color changing thin films and nanometer thin films, etc. 
4. Film, vacuum and material characterization
Electronic film, material characterization and detection technologies (secondary ion mass spectroscopy, quantitative ultrasound non-destructive detection), etc
5. Applications of optical fiber Sensors 
Including technologies for current, voltage, temperature, liquid level measurement and studies on smart structures and materials, etc.

6. Novel solid state lasers
Including diode-pumped solid state lasers at green, blue, red and other wavelengths, crystal fibers and crystal-fiber lasers, etc.

IOTRI has close intradisciplinary and interdisciplinary links with leading domestic and international universities and research institutions in the area of optoelectronics. Such as the Center for Optical Communication Studies is co-established by IOTRI and the Microwave and Digital Communication Research Institute in the same department, the National Integrated Optoelectronics Laboratory is collaborated by IOTRI, Jilin University and Institute of Semiconductors, Academia Sinica. There are also links with University of Southern California, University of Maryland Baltimore County in U.S.A., University of Tokyo in Japan, Technical University of Denmark, KAIST of Korea and Bell Labs of Lucent Technologies, etc. in academic and personnel exchange respectively. The IOTRI’s activities are greatly strengthened by all these links.
