1953-1956. Undergraduate Student, Department of Electronic Engineering, Tsinghua University, China.

Experience

1985-Present:

Professor, Electronic Engineering Department, Tsinghua University.

His research interests include Laser Diode Pumped Solid State Lasers, Microwave Photonics, Wavelength Division Multiplexing Fiber Communication systems, Photonic Switching and WDM All Optical Network, Optical Time Division Multiplexing Transmission and Optical Fiber Sensing, Fiber Ring Lasers, Fiber Amplifiers and Tunable Single Mode Narrow- linewidth Semiconductor Lasers. He is the author or co-authors of one book and about 100 papers, patents and presentations. He received the National Invention Prize in 1993(class 4), 1997(class 3), 1998(class 3) and National Prize of Progress in Science and Technology in 1993(class 3).

1987-1996:

Chairman, The Steering Committee of Optoelectronic Devices and System Integration Technology, High Technology Research & Development Program (863 Program) of China.

1989-1996: Director, National Research Center for Optoelectronic Technology, Beijing.

Research achievements include developing of He-Cd Laser, He-Ne

Laser Gyroscope and Solid State Lasers for Range finder.

Areas of Research Interests/ Research Projects

Laser and Optoelectronics.Professional accomplishments and contributions:

1. Made key contributions to developing Diode Pumped Solid State Lasers, demonstrating ( 1985) Diode Laser Pumped YAG Solid State Laser (DPSSL) with the highest efficiency, the narrowest single mode linewidth and the most stable frequency at that time .

2. Developing of Single Longitudinal Mode, Narrow Linewidth, Frequency-Stable External Cavity Semiconductor Lasers and their applications.

3. Demonstration of the Tunable Nd-doped and Er3+/Yb3+ doped fiber ring laser in 1989.

4. Developing the growth of crystal fiber and the crystal fiber devices.

5. Improvement of Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier and their application in WDM and Soliton Fiber Transmission system.
