On July 13, 2024, the closing ceremony of the 2024 Tsinghua University Department of Electronic Engineering Summer School (hereinafter referred to as the “Summer School”) was held at the Electronic Engineering Building of Tsinghua University. Professor Yuan Shen, Secretary of the CPC Committee of the Department of Electronic Engineering, attended the ceremony. Thirty-two Summer School participants from Singapore, the United States, Europe, and other regions, together with faculty members and students from the Department of Electronic Engineering, took part in the event.
Summer School Highlights
The closing ceremony began with a dinner reception. Following dinner, Professor Yuan Shen delivered remarks. On behalf of the Department of Electronic Engineering, he first extended a warm welcome to the faculty members and students from China and abroad who had participated in the Summer School, with special greetings to the students from Nanyang Technological University. He emphasized that the Summer School was not only an opportunity for academic learning, but also a memorable journey of cultural exchange and personal growth. He also expressed his sincere appreciation to all staff members whose efforts had contributed to the successful organization of the program.

Following the remarks, three student representatives from Nanyang Technological University, the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics, and the University of Notre Dame shared their experiences of studying and living at Tsinghua University. They noted that Tsinghua’s outstanding academic achievements were deeply impressive. Through the Summer School, they experienced not only the rigor and diligence of Tsinghua’s faculty members and students, but also their warmth, vitality, and kindness. They expressed their intention to bring the knowledge and experiences gained at Tsinghua back to their home countries and conveyed their sincere gratitude to the faculty members and students who had devoted considerable effort to the program.

Associate Professor Wulin Zhang of the Institute of Circuits and Systems, Associate Professor Xing Sheng of the Institute of Information Optoelectronics, and Assistant Professor Hongyang Jia of the Institute of Circuits and Systems then presented certificates of participation to the Summer School students. All three faculty members received their education at Tsinghua University, gained experience overseas, and later returned to Tsinghua to pursue their academic careers.

During the open-sharing session, students enthusiastically spoke about their distinctive experiences and reflections from the two-week program and revisited memorable moments through photographs. The students concluded the session with a group song as a farewell to their Summer School experience.

Over the course of the 14-day Summer School, the 32 international students experienced Tsinghua University’s distinctive academic environment, participated in a wide range of cultural and sports activities, and built valuable connections with faculty members and fellow students. Through the various activities offered by the program, the students not only strengthened their academic skills and broadened their disciplinary knowledge, but also laid a solid foundation for future exchange and study opportunities, undergraduate and graduate programs, and career development at Tsinghua University, in China, and around the world.
Highlights from the Summer School
This Summer School constituted the first part of the international summer program on “Sustainable Innovation and Electronic Information Technology,” jointly organized by the Department of Electronic Engineering at Tsinghua University and Nanyang Technological University. From July 15 to 28, twenty undergraduate students from the Department of Electronic Engineering were scheduled to attend the second part of the program at Nanyang Technological University, where they would study advanced electronic information technologies and gain an in-depth experience of Singaporean culture. During the autumn semester, the Department of Electronic Engineering would also invite international scholars to offer a primarily English-taught introductory course on sustainable innovation and electronic information technology to students across Tsinghua University.
Against the backdrop of a rapidly changing international environment, academic exchange, student education, and talent recruitment in the field of electronic information have faced considerable challenges. To address these challenges, the Department of Electronic Engineering launched the “Sustainable Innovation” Internationalization Strategic Initiative in 2022. In international education, the department has expanded the TOP EE+ international exchange program for undergraduate students and further developed the Tsinghua–Johns Hopkins dual master’s degree program. In internationalization at home, it has established an English-taught core curriculum system, jointly developed courses with overseas universities, and organized international summer schools. In global collaboration, it has hosted international forums, encouraged students to undertake overseas practice and exchange, and worked to build global platforms connecting industry, academia, and research.
The initiative aims to cultivate innovative talent with a global perspective, promote international academic exchange and industrial collaboration, enhance the department’s international influence, and contribute to the sustainable development of the electronic information discipline.
