UNESCAP Executive Secretary Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana Visits the Department of Electronic Engineering


On October 15th, 2026, a delegation led by Ms. Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), visited Tsinghua University. The delegation engaged in an extensive exchange with faculty members from the Department of Electronic Engineering and other departments, gaining insights into Tsinghua's cutting-edge achievements and innovative practices in cross-disciplinary AI applications.


During the meeting, Professor Wang Yu, Chair of the Department of Electronic Engineering, shared the team’s efforts in promoting the accessibility of computing resources. He presented a platform developed by the team that efficiently integrates diverse computing capacities to provide low-cost and high-quality computational support for AI education and research, thereby fostering more inclusive and equitable development of artificial intelligence technologies.


Following the discussions, Ms. Alisjahbana and the delegation, accompanied by Professor Wang Yu, visited the Department of Electronic Engineering, where they observed demonstrations of innovative projects including humanoid robots, bionic faces, and an urban simulator. Professor Wang emphasized that driven by real-world needs, the Department of Electronic Engineering integrated artificial intelligence technologies with key areas of social concern to translate fundamental research into tangible outcomes, thereby creating a virtuous cycle where scientific exploration and practical application reinforce each other. He further expressed that enhanced collaboration with UNESCAP could accelerate AI-driven breakthroughs in vertical industries such as intelligent transportation and modern agriculture, enabling transformative leapfrog development.

The visit served to strengthen mutual understanding between the two sides in the fields of artificial intelligence and interdisciplinary research, laying a solid foundation for future collaboration.
