Zheng Xiaoping, the Professor of Department of Electronic Engineering, Tried the "Cloning Class", Which Allows Many Students to Take the "Ultrafast Optics" Course at the Same Time

News.tsinghua.edu.cn, March 1-We have such a classroom where teachers and students do not know each other. The teachers are not required to write on blackboard, students are not required to stay in the classroom, and even these teachers and students are not from the same school. Through the establishment of the online "clone class" Yu class platform, many students can listen to the same course together, the "ultrafast optics" course given by Zheng Xiaoping, the professor of Department of Electronic Engineering, Tsinghua University. This is the first "clone class" opened by the Department of Electronic Engineering, Tsinghua University, as well as the first "clone class" that adopts the online teaching method in the field of electronic information opened by Tsinghua University for the purpose of helping Huazhong University of Science and Technology.

At 1:00 p.m. on February 28, Shen Ming, a doctoral student from the School of Optoelectronics of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, who lives in Shijiazhuang, turned on his mobile phone and got prepared for class. This was the standard procedure for students to "keep learning during closure" after the outbreak of Covid-19. However, the course to be taken later is somewhat different, as the course teacher is Zheng Xiaoping, the professor of Department of Electronic Engineering, Tsinghua University. Professor Zheng Xiaoping of our department gave classes to nearly 60 students from Tsinghua University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology and Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics, Chinese Academy of Sciences through Yu Class and Tencent Conference Platform.

Zheng Xiaoping gave a lesson to students

After being able to hear and see professor Zheng through the mobile phone, Shen Ming immediately concentrated on formula derivation and concept understanding. Based on the interaction of problems from time to time, he gradually had a better understanding of the ultra-fast optics. "I can hear clearly!" Yu Miao, an undergraduate student from the School of Physics of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, who lives in Heilongjiang, also took the same course. Similarly, more than 30 postgraduate students from Tsinghua University also spoke highly of the course: "It is something very special that I could take classes normally during the epidemic and interact with teachers like other students from Huazhong University of Science and Technology and other schools", Jin Yuanchao said.

    "Ultrafast optics" online course

Zheng Xiaoping is good at teaching the course of "ultrafast optics", which mainly involves the generation, compression, measurement and control of ultra-short pulse laser. This course involves ultra-fast physical laws, transmission theory and technology with respect to the interaction between ultra-short pulse laser and matter, so it has important applications in the field of optical communication, signal processing etc. To get prepared for the online course, Zheng Xiaoping has already done a lot of preparatory work before the start of the spring semester, including modifying courseware, getting familiar with Yu classes, configuring online teaching hardware, etc. After receiving the "cloning class" teaching task for more than 20 students from other schools, he felt very stressed and honored, so he prepared for the course in courseware making and interaction method in a targeted manner. "As a teacher, it is his duty to give class, and he should also bear the responsibility to help students from Wuhan's colleges and universities to attend classes."

Li Dongmei, Deputy Party Committee Secretary of Department of Electronic Engineering of Tsinghua University, said that in response to the school's call to "share Tsinghua's curriculum resources and tale social responsibilities", the Department of Electronic Engineering actively encouraged teachers to open "cloning classes" and organized/ recommended corresponding courses and opened relevant resources to other schools, hoping that more support will be given to other schools, especially those in Wuhan.
