There are two level 1 subjects and 7 level 2 subjects approved by the State Council Academic Degree Committee. All level 1 and level 2 subjects are authorized to confer Master and Ph. D Degree.

The Department accept excellent undergraduate students from Tsinghua University and from Universities other than Tsinghua by recommendation and exemption from the entrance exam to study for Master Degree or Doctoral Degree. The Department also accept students who have achieved satisfactory performance at the graduate student entrance exam to study for Master Degree or Doctoral Degree. The excellent graduate students seeking for Master Degree with great potential may apply to begin their doctoral program ahead of schedule.

The period of schooling for master degree usually lasted two to three years; for doctoral degree, lasted three to four years. The program combined with master and doctorate degrees usually lasted four to five years.

For those working staffs with Bachelor Degree and engineering experience, may be accepted to the Master of Engineering Program by recommendation. The Department offers opportunities to those who satisfy the requirements to study Master Engineering Program as on-the-job graduate students. The Department also offers orientational education program for Master Degree.

Program Overview

Students enrolled in this program will spend their first year in Johns Hopkins University for course study, and the second year in Tsinghua University for lab research.

Year 2: Tsinghua University

During your second year, build upon your knowledge by pursuing thesis research in the Biomedical Engineering or Electronic Engineering departments at Tsinghua University. Application requirements

- Personal statement: please provide a maximum 2-page overview of your academic goals, career objectives and research interests.

- Recommendations: two letters of recommendation are required. At least one letter of recommendation must be from a faculty member who is familiar with the applicant’s academic record. Paper-based letters are required to arrive in envelopes signed and sealed by the recommender.

- Transcripts: unofficial transcript is accepted for application. If the applicant is selected for admission, official transcript is required at registration. The final official transcript must list the degree earned, or a certificate of graduation is required.

- TOEFL (The Test of English as a Foreign Language) is required.

- Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is required.

- Additional documents / evaluation: Candidates who wish to have their papers, abstracts, talks, portfolios, etc, reviewed, can included these materials as well.
