    Liu Tieyan, Vice President of the Microsoft Research Asia, was employed by Tsinghua University as a Part-time Professor

    On May 20, 2019, Dr. Liu Tieyan, Vice President of the Microsoft Research Asia, was employed by Tsinghua University as a part-time professor. The employment ceremony was held in the Department of Electronic Engineering, Tsinghua University.

    Dr. Liu Tieyan, an alumnus in Grade 1994 of the Department of Electronic Engineering, Tsinghua University, joined the Microsoft Asia Research Institute in 2003 and served as the vice president of the Microsoft Research Asia in 2015. He is also a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and an outstanding member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). As one of the most influential scholars in the field of artificial intelligence, Dr. Liu Tieyan has attained great achievements in academia and industry and has made great contributions to the integration of machine learning and information retrieval and the application of machine learning technology to actual products.

    Dr. Liu Tieyan is not only deeply engaged in scientific research, but also has always concerned the development of teaching of domestic and foreign universities in the computer field. Under his leadership, the Microsoft Research Asia and the Department of Electronic Engineering, Tsinghua University developed a series of deep cooperation. In December 2018, both parties cooperated in organizing a seminar on academic cooperation between Tsinghua University-Microsoft Research Asia. Nearly 20 teachers and researchers shared the latest academic achievements, covering machine learning and data mining, multimedia intelligence, chips, platforms, systems and networks and other hot fields. A bridge of communication between university teachers and corporate researchers was built. The Advanced Machine Learningcourse offered by Dr. Liu Tieyan and the team of teachers of the Department of Electronic Engineering, Tsinghua University will also be open to master students and senior undergraduates of Tsinghua University in related fields this fall semester. In addition, Dr. Liu Tieyan also serves as a visiting professor at Carnegie Mellon University, an honorary professor at the University of Nottingham, and a part-time professor at the University of Science and Technology of China and Nankai University.

    The employment ceremony was chaired by Professor Wang Yu, Deputy Party Committee Secretary of the Department of Electronic Engineering, Tsinghua University. Dr. Liu Tieyan first gave an academic report entitledPromote the Frontier Development of Machine Translation, introducing Microsoft's breakthroughs in Chinese-English news translation and multilingual generalization capabilities and the core technologies behind them, and prospecting tendency of future development of this field.

    After the academic report, Professor Huang Yidong, Chair of the Department of Electronic Engineering, Tsinghua University, announced the employment and issued a letter of employment to Dr. Liu Tieyan. Professor Zhang Xudong, tutor of Dr. Liu Tieyan, witnessed the employment ceremony and presented a commemorative plaque.

    Professor Huang Yidong said:" "Employing Dr. Liu Tieyan as a part-time professor of the Department of Electronic Engineering plays a very important role in promoting the improvement of the scientific research and academic level of our department in the field of artificial intelligence, surpassing the world's cutting-edge technology, leading innovation and development, enriching and enhancing talent training resources and strength."

    In his thank-you speech, Dr. Liu Tieyan first thanked leaders at all levels of the school and the departments for their support and trust and teachers for their training. He said that he would make unremitting efforts to promote the all-round cooperation between Tsinghua and Microsoft Research Asia with the spirit and academic ideals of Tsinghua University.

    Introduction to Liu Tieyan

    Dr. Liu Tieyan, is an alumnus in Grade 1994 of the Department of Electronic Engineering, Tsinghua University, Vice President of the Microsoft Research Asia, fellow of the IEEE, outstanding scientist of ACM and part-time professor at CMU, University of Science and Technology of China and Nankai University. His pioneering research has promoted the integration between machine learning and information retrieval, and he is widely regarded as a representative in the field of "sequential learning". In recent years, he has also made great achievements in deep learning, distributed learning, and reinforcement learning. He has published more than 200 papers in top conferences and journals, which have been cited tens of thousands of times. He served as the chairman of the Program Committee or the field chairman of top international conferences such as WWW/WebConf, SIGIR, KDD, NIPS, AAAI, and the associate editor of well-known international journals such as ACM TOIS and ACM TWEB. He has won the Best Paper Award and the Most Cited Paper Award many times; He also won the Top 10 Chinese Author Award for Springer Computer Books, the Most Cited Chinese Scholar Elsevier Award in the Elsevier Computer Field, Qing Zhu Award of China Computer Federation, Technology Innovator Award of List of China AI Heroes, and the AMiner Global Most Influential Scholar Award (in the field of information retrieval, 2007-2017).
