On the afternoon of December 22, the seminar on "Basic Requirements for Innovative Achievements Used to Apply for an Academic Degree by Graduate Students and Cultivation of Doctoral Students" organized by the Academic Degree Evaluation Subcommittee of "Electronics and Communication Engineering" was held on the 11th floor of the Rohm Building. More than 40 people including Executive Vice President Wang Xiqin, Chen Wei, Director of the Degree Office, members of the "Electronics and Communication Engineering" Subcommittee, and some doctoral supervisors in the Department of Electronic Engineering attended the seminar. The seminar was chaired by Yang Huazhong, Chairman of the Academic Degree Evaluation Subcommittee.

First, Yang Huazhong introduced the purpose of the seminar: In the context of two centuries, Tsinghua University and the "Electronics and Communication Engineering" discipline need considerable progress. They hoped that students would be encouraged to do more cutting-edge and innovative work and obtain systematic research achievements through the reform of cultivation of doctoral students. The non-paper-centric effective method needs to be discussed during the cultivation of doctoral students and postgraduate students.

Four young teachers returning from abroad introduced the process and mechanism of cultivation of doctoral students in several foreign first-class universities. Then the teachers held a warm discussion about how to learn from the experience of international first-class universities and formulating effective and feasible rules and regulations according to the practical situation to improve the cultivation quality of doctoral students.

In his speech, Wang Xiqin proposed to promote the modernization of the school management system. He pointed out that the current teacher reform was basically completed, and young teachers developed independently after the reform; then we need to promote the cultivation of graduate students towards the modern system and to further promote the development of graduate students. He believed that topic selection in postgraduate training is very important, the combination of professors with forces in the industrial circles is required and key problems should be caught and solved.

Finally, Yang Huazhong mentioned in the summary that rules should be developed according to the characteristics of the discipline, and the rules should also be jointly maintained by everyone; an academic-only cultural atmosphere needs to be built in the entire teaching body.
