    The Industrial Implementation of the Spectral Imaging Chip Transformed from the Achievements of Associate Professor Cui Kaiyu of Our Department Started

    On the afternoon of October 15, 2020, the spectral imaging chip achievement commercialization enterprise of Associate Professor Cui Kaiyu from the research group of Professor Huang Yidong of our Department, Beijing Seetrum Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Seetrum") held a solemn opening ceremony at the Sunshine Hall of Tus Park. Cai Yongxiang, Deputy Director of Beijing New Materials and New Energy Technology Development Center, Director Yang Xiaoli, and Deputy Director Pan Changbo of Science and Technology Project Department of Beijing New Materials and New Energy Technology Development Center; Wang Yu, Chair of the Department of Electronic Engineering, Wang Yuzhu, Dean Assistant of Office of Technology Transfer; and Wang Biao, Executive Director of Huakong Technology Transfer Co. Ltd., et al. participated in the opening ceremony. Meanwhile, nearly 120 guests and friends from the academic, industrial, and investment circles were present at the ceremony.

    Spectrum is a new dimension of information and spectral analysis is an indispensable and important technology for intelligent social biomedicine, water quality monitoring, mineral resource exploration, precision agriculture, and military reconnaissance. The high-precision spectral imaging chip of optical bands proposed and successfully developed by Associate Professor Cui Kaiyu together with the student team led by him has achieved a snapshot spectral camera, which can obtain spectral information at different points in space at one time, being the first in the world. The spectral imaging chip is composed of tens of thousands of micro-spectrometers, and each micro-spectrometer can independently realize the spectral analysis function, and a complete spectral image can be obtained by taking a photo. The single micro-spectrometer in it has relatively good broadband and high precision characteristics, the working spectral bandwidth is 450-750nm, and the accuracy is up to 0.2nm. The application of this new technology can realize the acquisition of the real-time spectral big data in each field, which enables the building of a future "intelligent spectral cloud" to become possible. The achievement commercialization startup, Seetrum, is responsible for the industrial implementation of this innovative technology. It gathers a group of industry elites in frontier fields such as nanophotonics, integrated circuits, AI, and cloud computing, and is committed to becoming a leader of global spectrum chips to enable the ubiquity of spectral perception.

    At the opening ceremony, Professor Wang Yu, Chair of the Department, firstly took the stage to deliver a speech. Professor Wang mentioned that in recent years, the scientific and technological research achievement commercialization performance of the Department of Electronic Engineering has been improved significantly, accounting for 12% in all the intellectual property commercialization projects of Tsinghua University; and the Department of Electronic Engineering accounts for one sixth in terms of the smooth development of intellectual property commercialization and incubation companies. Professor Wang emphasized that the scientific research objective of the Department of Electronic Engineering is either to make things that can be written into textbooks or make things with use values. He hoped that Seetrum can adhere to its objectives, work hard for development and truly achieve the industrial implementation of innovative optoelectronic chips.

    Mr. Wang Yuzhu, Dean Assistant of Office of Technology Transfer, Tsinghua University, and General Manager Wang Biao, Executive Director of Huakong Technology Transfer Co. Ltd., took the stage and delivered speeches respectively, emphasizing that a group of excellent hard technology startups has come into being at the Department of Electronic Engineering, and wishing that Seetrum can achieve excellent performance in the optoelectronic chip industry.

    Subsequently, Professor Huang Yidong, Founder of Seetrum Technology Co., Ltd. and Deputy Director of the Academic Committee of Tsinghua University, took the stage to deliver a speech. In the light of the current development status of the national optoelectronic chips, she proposed that not only the current "bottleneck" issues should be solved, but also close attention should be paid to the issue of how to make innovative technologies that "break through the bottleneck of others". The core spectral imaging chip of Seetrum has finally come to the industrial implementation today after 15 years of scientific research accumulation; whereas, the research, development and pilot test of this innovative and leading optoelectronic chip are achieved on the optoelectronic process platform of Institute for Electronics and Information Technology in Tianjin, Tsinghua University, and Seetrum is a successful case of the Department of Electronic Engineering's exploration of the incubation model of optoelectronic chips.

    Associate Professor Cui Kaiyu, another founder and chief scientist of Seetrum reviewed the development history of Seetrum and explained the meaning of the company name and its Logo in his speech. "What kind of belief is needed to support the years of waiting of scientific research, and what kind of vision is needed to entrust the ambitious goal of youth", the vivid explanation of Mr. Cui led everyone to further learn about the mission and belief of Seetrum.

    The last speech in the first half was delivered by Dr. Qu Di, Chairman of Tianjin H-Chip Technology Group Corporation - the operation team of the optoelectronic process platform of Institute for Electronics and Information Technology in Tianjin, Tsinghua University. Dr. Qu pointed out that relying on mature industry experience, H-Chip has provided strong support for the research, development and pilot test of Seetrum, and it will continue to provide assistance for Seetrum subsequently. At the same time, it will incubate more innovation-led technology like Seetrum to promote the development of China's optoelectronic chip industry.

    At the beginning of the second half of the ceremony, leaders and guest representatives and the founding team of the company took the stage for ribbon-cutting and opening. In the warm applause of everyone, Beijing Seetrum Technology Co., Ltd. officially announced its establishment.

    After the ribbon-cutting and opening ceremony, Fei Jianjiang, General Manager of Oriza Seed Venture Capital Management Co., Ltd., a representative of the investors, took the stage to deliver a speech. He said that as a lead investor of Cambricon, a pioneer in the global AI chip field, Oriza Seed is committed to the incubation and investment of China's hard technology. Projects and teams originated from Tsinghua University are the focus of Oriza Seed. Oriza Seed is very optimistic about the future of spectrum technologies and sincerely wishes that Seetrum becomes better with each passing day.

    Dr. He Jing, Managing Partner of SEE Fund and General Manager of Huakong Electronic Technology (Tianjin) Investment Management Co., Ltd. said in the speech that the names of SEE Fund and SEETRUM achieve the same result by different methods, with both having SEE prefixes, indicating that they both come from the Department of Electronic Engineering, Tsinghua University. As an investment institution that understands both industry and finance, SEE Fund is very optimistic about the development prospects of spectrum chips.

    At the end of the ceremony, three co-founders of Seetrum took the stage to deliver speeches respectively. R&D scientist Dr. Cai Xusheng talked about the journey of his heart in the experimental invention of the spectrum chip project from zone to one. COO Dr. Huang Zhilei talked about the product advantages of spectrum chips and the infinite possibilities of commercialization. And CEO Dr. Wang Yubo talked about his "initial intention" to be dedicated in the hard technology cause in China as well as the "mission" of Seetrum to be dedicated in doing a job good in the commercialization of excellent basic scientific research results.

    So far, the opening ceremony concluded successfully. With the sincere blessings and eager expectations of the participants, Seetrum has officially set sail.
